Best Camping and RV Generator Reviews

Are you in the market for the best RV generator? Recently, I purchased a vintage motor-home for camping trips. It was in pretty good shape, and I got a great deal on it, but it did leave a few things to be desired. For one thing, the generator did not work very well and was obnoxiously loud.

This necessitated buying a new one. That meant doing a great deal of research to make sure that I would find one which conserved power, ran quietly, and would offer the run-time that I was looking for.

Why the Champion generator? We feel like it's just as quiet as the Honda, the customer service is on point, and you are paying third of the price.

See below for more options in the market for RV power generators.

Here's a list of Best Camping and RV Generators

Eventually, I found a generator that fit the bill, but it was a pretty extensive process. So I have decided to share what I've learned along the way as well as recommendations for generators which are ideal for RV use or camping in general.

Features to Consider When Shopping for the Best RV and Camping Generator

Following are some features that you will want to pay attention to when you are picking out a generator for camping.

  • Inverter or conventional? Traditional generators which turn out AC power are referred to as "conventional" generators. Today, however, many generators fall under the category of "inverter" generators. These types of generators are equipped with rectifiers and capacitors. Their power is converted to DC electricity. The resulting power is "cleaner" in nature, which makes it a more suitable option for sensitive electronics.
  • Watts. The watts of power produced determine which devices you can run off of your generator. Check the wattage required for each of your devices, and add them together to figure out an approximation of what you need.
  • Eco-friendly features. Quite a few generators today are designed with eco-friendly features. These generators may have lower fuel consumption requirements and may also help you save money.
  • Runtime. This refers to how long you can run the generator before you need to supply it with new fuel.
  • Fuel source. Some of your options include gasoline, diesel, liquid propane, or solar power. Some generators even allow you to use more than one fuel source. Gasoline is a good option if you want to save money. Propane is best shelf life is a concern. Diesel is ideal if you want something cleaner than gasoline. Solar power is great for saving money and protecting the environment, but may not be the right fit for all climates or locations.
  • Size and weight. Dimensions and weight are more of a concern with a portable camping generator which you will have to carry than an RV generator which is going to sit in a compartment.
  • Decibels. This is a measure of the sound output of a generator. A quiet generator is very important for camping so that you do not disturb other guests or wildlife unnecessarily.
  • Extra features. Look for features which improve ease-of-use. For example, a fuel gauge that tells you when you were close to running out is a helpful additional feature.
  • Build and durability. Try to purchase a solidly built generator which you will be able to get a great deal of use out of without worrying about it breaking down.
  • Parts and accessories. Check into the availability of replacement parts as well as optional accessories for the model that you're thinking about buying.
  • Cost. Finally, cost is always a consideration in making a significant purchase like buying a camping or RV generator.

Top RV and Camping Generators Reviews

Quietest Generator for RV and Camping Reviews

Champion 4000-Watt RV Ready Digital Hybrid Open Frame Inverter with Quiet Technology

Highlights

  • 4000 watts
  • THD is at or under 3% for clean electricity
  • Max runtime: 17 hours
  • Economy mode
  • 64 dBA
  • Outlets: 120V 30A RV outlet, two 120 V 20A household outlets, 12V DC outlet
  • 3-year limited warranty
  • Free tech support for the lifetime of the device

Open Frame Inverter Design

The Champion 4000-Watt RV Ready generator features a unique open frame build. This design offers a couple of benefits. For one, it reduces the weight of the generator. For another, it allows it to run 50% more quietly that Champion’s “traditional” 3,500-watt generator. So with this generator, you are getting more power, but less noise.

The Power You Need

On that note, 4000 watts is significantly more than what a lot of other camping or RV generators provide. So if you have high power demands, this is one of the best purchases you make. It is also parallel ready. So if you want to connect additional generators for even more wattage, you can do so by purchasing the parallel kit which Champion makes available.

PROS

  • With 4000 watts, you can power quite a few devices and appliances simultaneously.
  • This generator provides excellent runtime before you need to put in more fuel.
  • Ease-of-use for this generator is exceptional. It is a breeze to add more oil when you need it.
  • The open frame build discussed earlier really is a "best of both worlds" design. You get all the benefits of a high-quality inverter generator, but you have the look and feel of a conventional generator.

CONS

  • Although it is not terribly loud, this generator could still stand to be quieter.
  • Even though this generator is comparatively lightweight (when considering some of Champion’s other generators), it is still pretty heavy and can be hard to move without the optional wheel attachment accessory. That means making an extra expenditure if you want to wheel it about.

Overall Assessment

The reason I have picked this generator as the overall best choice is because it combines useful features of conventional and inverter generators in one powerful package. It may not be the lightest-weight or quietist generator on the market, but for the amount of power provides, it is quite a bit lighter and quieter than a lot of competing products. This makes it a well-rounded option.

Best RV and Camping Generator for Fuel Source Flexibility

Champion 3800-Watt Dual Fuel RV Ready Portable Generator with Electric Start

Highlights

  • 3800 watts
  • Gas or propane
  • Up to 9 hours on gas or 10.5 hours on propane
  • RV and household outlets
  • 224cc Champion engine
  • Easy Touch Start feature
  • 3-year limited warranty
  • Tech support free for the lifetime of the device
  • 68 dBA
  • Comes with tires and a folding handle

Choose the Type of Fuel You Prefer to Use

You get to decide whether you want to feel your generator using propane or gasoline. If you opt to use gasoline, you can expect up to 9 hours of runtime before you need to pour more gas into the tank. You can get a longer runtime of around 10.5 hours if you decide to use propane instead. The tank has a 20-pound capacity.

Protect Your Appliances and Devices

While this generator is not listed as an inverter model, it is equipped with a feature called Volt Guard. The purpose of this feature is to prevent power surges. This provides some basic protection for sensitive electronics and other appliances and devices.

PROS

  • Two options for fuel provide you with excellent flexibility.
  • 3800 is a lot of watts so you can power many appliances simultaneously.
  • The portability features are fantastic. You do not have to purchase the wheels separately, and the handle can be collapsed when you do not need it.
  • With ease-of-use features such as Touch Start and automatic shut-off in case of low oil, this generator reduces hassles and lets you focus on enjoying your camping trip.

CONS

  • The location of the drain for the oil is a bit inconvenient being as it is way too close to the frame.
  • While this generator is promoted as being “quiet,” that is a relative term. It is not the loudest generator you will come across, but it is not exactly “quiet” either.

Overall Assessment

I recommend this generator if there are times you think that you may need to switch away from your usual fuel source. For example, perhaps you generally like to save money by using gasoline. But if you're thinking about spending some extended time off the grid, you might prefer to use propane because of its superior shelf life. This generator can accommodate either.

  • Measures just 8” by 5”
  • Carrying handle included
  • Produces no noise or vibrations
  • Takes 10 hours to charge via sunlight

Incredibly Portable

Here is something a bit different from the other generators which I have shared with you so far. This generator is not designed for RV use. It is an incredibly small and lightweight unit which is built with outdoor camping in mind. You could fit it in a large backpack. As such, you can only use it to power small devices and appliances, but if you are camping in a tent or hammock, that is all you would need.

Ideal for Minimizing Your Impact on the Environment

Besides its excellent portability, what makes the Jackery Power Station Generator Explorer 240 fantastic is its lack of impact on the natural world. Because this generator does not use traditional fuels, it does not produce emissions. Additionally, it is not just quiet—it operates without noise. It also does not create vibrations which could scare off wildlife. That means that you can enjoy nature to its fullest, and take pride in knowing that you are not disrupting the beauty around you.

PROS

  • If you want to avoid noise and vibrations while powering your devices on a camping trip, this is a pretty matchless option.
  • Ease-of-use was foremost in mind when this device was designed. You can get it up and running quickly so that you can go about the rest of your business around camp.
  • This generator is so lightweight and small that you can take it with you backpacking.
  • This device is one of the most eco-friendly options you will ever find since it draws its power from the sun.

CONS

  • You do need to purchase the solar panel to use with this generator separately. This adds to the expense.
  • You can only run one AC device at a time because only one plug is available.

Overall Assessment

If both protecting and enjoying the natural world are your top priorities, and you only want to power a few small devices or appliances during a camping trip, you will be well served with this compact solar generator.

Like the Jackery portable generator above, this one from Paxcess is totally silent and produces no harmful emissions. This means you can use it in any campground without violating the rules. You also do not need to worry about disturbing the local wildlife. You also do not need to interrupt your own experience of the great outdoors with unwanted noise and vibrations.

Best RV and Camping Generator for Sensitive Electronics

WEN 56200i Super Quiet 2000-Watt Portable Inverter Generator

WEN 56200i

Highlights

  • 2000 watts
  • 51 decibels (at the lowest)
  • 79.7 cc 4-stroke OHV engine
  • 2 three-prong 120V receptacles, single 12V DC receptacle, single 5V USB port
  • Parallel-ready
  • Eco-mode
  • Includes a carrying cord and other convenience and ease-of-use features

Clean Power for Your Devices

This is a solid inverter generator which provides you with low-distortion “pure sine wave” energy. The voltage is steady, and the distortion is kept under 1.2% even when the load is full.

Very Quiet

Along with clean power, the priority when this generator was designed was to keep it as quiet as possible. It is loud enough to be noticeable, but is relatively unobtrusive if you are not running it at full load. Indeed, at a quarter load, it generates only 51 decibels of noise. According to the manufacturer, this is comparable to the noise that an air conditioner in a window typically makes.

PROS

  • You do not need to worry about your electronics shorting out because of power spikes or the voltage abruptly dipping.
  • The generator is relatively quiet, especially if it is not operating at full capacity.
  • Economy mode allows you to increase runtime and conserve energy.
  • Although there are higher watt generator is on the market, the fact that this model is parallel-ready means that you can connect others if necessary to achieve the desired wattage output.

CONS

  • Occasionally these generators seem to develop fuel leaks. This does not usually happen, but it is an issue to be on the lookout for.

Overall Assessment

The WEN 56200i is quite similar to the popular Yamaha EF2000iS, although it is a little bit taller and just slightly louder. It is a great option overall for quiet operation and clean power, but is an especially ideal choice if you are interested in the Yamaha EF2000iS, but are looking for something in a lower price range.

Supremely Quiet Operation

One of the best things about the Paxcess 2000 Watts Portable Inverter RV Generator is that it is very quiet. While it is most quiet when running a low load, is actually surprisingly quiet even at full capacity.

Smooth and Reliable

You can expect smooth, consistent performance from this generator right from the moment you start it. This is enhanced through Economy Mode, which optimizes the speed at which the engine runs to conserve fuel and keep noise levels to a minimum at all times.

PROS

  • The generator includes a variety of ports and receptacles so you can use it in a variety of settings for a range of different purposes.

  • The inverter technology of the Paxcess 2000 Generator makes it safe to use with sensitive electronics.

CONS

  • The kill switch is a bit inconvenient owing to both its location and size.
  • This generator is definitely on the hefty side. While it can be transported, lugging it around is a pain.

Overall Assessment

Like a number of the generators which I am sharing in this list, this one actually satisfies a variety of different use cases. Honda EU2200i 2200-Watt 120-Volt Super Quiet Portable Inverter Generator

Honda EU2200i

Highlights

  • 2000 watts
  • 120-Volt
  • 48-47 decibels
  • Parallel-ready
  • Eco-Throttle System
  • Runtime ranges from 4 to 9.6 hours

Eco-Throttle Mode Works Great

One of the key features of the Honda EU2200i is the Eco-Throttle mode. If you are running in this mode, and your load is not too high, you will find that the generator automatically becomes quieter and sips (not gulps) fuel.

Starting This Generator is Easy

Quite a few generators are notoriously tricky to get running and may require multiple pulls. I have found that this generator is consistently easy to get started, and usually only takes a single pull.

PROS

  • Eco-Throttle helps keep this generator quiet and efficient.
  • This generator is pretty much vibration-free. This is true at a low or high load.
  • You should find that you can turn the generator on right away without trouble.
  • Since the generator is parallel-ready, you can scale up your power system as needed.

Supremely Quiet

It is one thing for a manufacturer to claim its generator is quiet. It is another to find a generator which actually is really quiet. This generator performs quite impressively to expectations in this regard. As such, you should find it ideal for your campsite.

Easy to Scale Up

With a lot of generators, you have to purchase a parallel kit separately if you want to add on more units. That is not the case with the Paxcess Super Quiet Inverter 2300. This model has a parallel kit built right in. This saves you time, money and hassle if you decide that you need more power.

PROS

Best RV and Camping Generator for Run-time

Champion 3500-Watt RV Ready Portable Generator (EPA)

Note: The Champion 4000 “hybrid” model which I recommended as the best overall choice actually has the best runtime. I have provided this one simply to offer a less expensive alternative which is also a solid option.

Champion 3500-Watt

Highlights

  • 4000 starting watts and 3500 running watts
  • 68 decibels
  • Up to 12 hours of runtime
  • Volt Guard overload protection
  • Outlets: 120V 30A locking outlet, 120V 20A household outlet, 120V 30A RV outlet
  • Backed by a 3-year limited warranty
  • Lifetime tech support
  • Shuts off automatically in case of low oil

Offers Great Runtime

While the Champion 4000 offers up to 17 hours of runtime, the Champion 3500-Watt Portable Generator is another excellent option if runtime is your priority. If you are running at a 50% load, should be able to get up to 12 hours.

What if you are operating at a higher load? This generator actually continues to be surprisingly efficient even if you are operating at close to full capacity. While you cannot expect to get 12 hours out of it at a full load, you should be able to power your devices for quite a while before you need to add more gas.

Excellent Overall Value

You will find that this generator sells at the slightly lower price range than many competing products. Considering that it is sufficient and include some nice features, it is a bargain at the price at which it is available.

PROS

  • You probably will not characterize this generator as “quiet” when you hear it, but it is not all that loud either.
  • 12 hours of runtime is pretty good, and with 3500 watts at your disposal, you should be able to power quite a few devices and appliances.
  • Even though this generator does not provide you with the kind of clean power that you could get from an inverter generator, it does protect your devices from power spikes using Volt Guard technology.

CONS

  • Sometimes this particular model of generator does not have a very long lifespan.
  • This is not an inverter generator, and it also does not have Eco Mode.

Overall Assessment

Because of the lifespan issues mentioned above, this generator is more suitable for occasional use than everyday use. So if you live full time in an RV, this is probably not the generator which I would recommend. But if you're looking for something for the occasional adventure on the road, this generator might fit your needs. It also makes for a reliable emergency backup generator.

Champion 3500W RV Ready Portable Generator Video Review

Conclusion

You now have recommendations for RV and camping generators which are fuel-efficient, quiet, easy to operate, and offer great wattage and runtime for a reasonable price. Whether you go with my overall best pick, the Champion 4000-Watt RV Open Frame Inverter, or you choose one of the other recommendations on my list, you should find yourself with a reliable, robust generator to power all of life’s adventures.
